1. Solid Opal

Unique properties

  • A solid opal can be worn in water.

Storage and handling

  • Avoid exposure to sudden changes in temperature.
  • Store at room temperature (20 Celsius/68 Fahrenheit).
  • Excessive everyday wear can lead to potential scratching, chipping and cracks; especially rings.
  • Avoid dropping on hard surfaces (tiles).

Cleaning

  • Handle with soft cotton gloves to remove fingerprints and smudges.
  • Solid opal jewelry can be cleaned in an ultra-sonic jewelry cleaner.

Note:  Always check cleaning solution properties for compatibility with opal.

 

2. Doublet Opal

Unique Properties

  • An opal doublet should not be immersed in water. An opal doublet is a manmade composite.

Storage and Handling

  • An opal doublet should be stored at room temperature (20 Celsius/68 Fahrenheit). Avoid exposing the opal to sudden changes in temperature.

Cleaning

  • Avoid immersing an opal doublet in water or jewelry cleaning solutions.
  • Clean opal surface with a soft cotton cloth.

 

3. Triplet Opal

Unique properties

  • A triplet opal should not be immersed in water.
  • Triplet opals are best suited for costume/fashion jewellery.

Storage and Handling

  • A triplet opal should be stored at room temperature (20 Celsius/68 Fahrenheit).
  • A triplet opal should not be immersed in water or exposed to solvents. Exposure to water can cause ‘clouding’ – a water mark – which effectively destroys the triplet.
  • Triplets cannot be repaired however they can be replaced cost effectively.

Cleaning

  • Do not immerse an opal triplet in water or jewellery cleaning solutions.
  • Clean with a soft cotton cloth.
